“Laugh, and the whole world laughs with you” – Ella Wheeler Wilcox
Comedy is something quite hard to pin down. It’s subjective as well as abstract, yet all of us understand it along with all its sub-brands of humour.
It’s a tough cookie to crack, so that’s why when a brand does it right – it really pays off.
From black to cringe, to the more popular styles like wit, wordplay and slapstick humour – these interchangeable variables along with timing, relevance and delivery can all be melded into what could be your very own concoction of humour.
Knowing full well of this, that’s why some of the most powerful companies in the world — GE, Google, Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Nestlé, among them — are hiring increasing numbers of stand-up comedians, improv masters and comedy troupes to write, produce and star in their advertising.
As brands get more social, they start acting more like you and I, and obviously we gravitate to the ones who make us laugh. It’s just basic human nature.
So here are 6 brands you must follow, if not for their products then for their unique brand of humour:
1) Old Spice
Old Spice doesn’t only pick fights with other brands publicly but their brand of random and over-the-top humour has earned their place at the top of the list. From their commercials to even just their ‘About’ description, Old Spice are seriously owning it!
Known for the quick wit and edgy one-liners, Nando’s is king of being current. On top of all things hot and their endless bag of chicken puns, we always have something to look forward to from this famous grilled chicken brand when a viral situation arises.
3) Mars Curiosity (NASA)
As in, the lunar rover. These NASA-run social media accounts feature sassy, first person updates from the rover itself, who incorporates funny pop culture references and a bold attitude. Its Twitter account has more than 1 million followers, and its Facebook page has over 270,000 fans. Not too shabby, NASA.

For a simple potato chip brand, they really go the extra mile by transforming their user submitted images into comedy gold with their hilarious status updates and silly illustrations.
Definitely descending from a higher breed, this brand mixes high-class laughs with quite literally toilet humour to bring you a one-of-a-kind brand. It’s crude but eloquent. It’s vile but sophisticated. It’s plainly and simply brilliant.
Skittles’ social sense of humour is apparently all about being silly and ridiculous. But it definitely brings a smile to your face, doesn’t it? It’s really like as if a kid ate a whole bag of Skittles and was allowed to run their entire social media ecosystem.
So the next time you’re planning your social media updates, why not incorporate a little humour here and there? Try bringing out your inner comedian as it might ultimately launch your brand into stardom.
Is your brand having the last laugh?
